√1=1 and-1

The only way to communicate this truth is to use words (al be it a very humble “and”) and symbols. Young learners in mathematics use apply this rule to great effect. The older learner in mathematics, however substitutes this way of communication by the using the letter “i””(which conveys + and -), and writing it next to the letter “1”.  The use of the symbol “1i” in mathematics leads to the definition and existence of the imaginary number system.

The irony however lies in the fact that the only way that the problem of a double truth could be solved is by using a letter, and in a way submitting to the creative power of the letter. The realization of this can lead to a deep understanding and appreciation for both the letter and the word, and not the letter or the word.

Together the letter (science) and the word (philosophy) are more creative. They creative experience in the utilisation of truths from both the letter and the word are more than using the letter or the word. The young learner should therefore be encouraged to develop and appreciate science (mathematics) and philosophy (language), and NOT science (mathematics) or philosophy(language).
