WorldShift 2012

How can WorldShift be more effective?

I’ve spent many years researching and writing about global issues. I’m now shifting focus from books to the web, and linking to like-minded people and organizations. If you’re curious to know more about me and my work, visit Human Solutions Now.

I share the belief that we are in a global emergency. To achieve global emergence requires urgent action or we will end up with global catastrophe instead. I also believe that inner transformation of our worldview and consciousness, and healing of our emotional traumas are prerequisites for success in outer transformation of our families, communities, societies, and species. So much, I imagine, is common ground amongst members of WorldShift 2012.

As a new member of WS 2012, I ask:

  • What is the unique contribution that WS 2012 can make to global emergence?
  • How can it be more effective in that role?
  • What can we learn from other organizations about how to stimulate change?
  • What can we contribute to other organizations?

Following are a few initial thoughts. When I look at WS 2012, I see an organization with:

  • Fewer than 1000 members
  • Quite a lot of blog posts but very few comments, or discussion
  • Few groups or events.

So how are we going to change the world?

I was brought up to believe that comparisons are odious, but when I look around at some activist organizations I see:

  • Avaaz with over 9m members and many active campaigns that are changing things for the better around the world
  • A similar organization in Australia, GetUp!, has almost 600,000 members who are changing the country
  • 350.org has untold thousands of members from every country, and is making a huge contribution to climate action through creative and innovative events that catch media attention.
  • Transition Network is facilitating adaptation to climate change and peak oil in hundreds of towns across the world.

OK, so these organizations are focused on outer action, on practical reform. But they are putting into practice inner values that I think we probably all share. Things like grassroots democracy, community, non-hierarchical structures, human rights, environmental protection, sustainability, peaceful resolution of conflicts, and more. Could it be that they are achieving inner transformation of the world through engagement with specific practical reforms? What can we learn from this for WorldShift?

On the other hand, what is it that these campaigning organizations lack that WS 2012 might bring if we joined forces? Meditation and other practices?  A greater sense of the meaning and purpose of life? A sense of the universe as living and conscious? Diverse methods of inner healing that bring self-esteem, empowerment, inner harmony and more? What else? How can we best bring these gifts to the campaigners of the world?

Please post your ideas in response – I’d love to spark a vigorous discussion here.

It is said that WorldShift is about a change in consciousness and approaches this from a holistic point of view. Other communities are more practical and in that sense more active. In my opinion the real real shift comes when the change is orchestrated on multiple levels. This means it's about changing the way we think and what we think, changing the way we see ourselves and the world, changing the way we communicate, changing the way we feel, changing the way we live, changing the way we act and last but not least changing our sense of destination, where do we want to go and in what way?

For WorldShift to be more effective this means we should come together. Not only virtually but in real life and work these things out. But there are some dilemma's here:

We all have our life's and and responsibilities and take care of these 'the old way' the system still is the easiest way to manage short term objectives. For instance: It's possible to grow some of my own food in the garden but this takes effort and a lot of time. It's rewarding in a way I admit but i'm still depending on the supermarket. The same is can be said about energy, healthcare, transport, safety etcetera. With all these things I get the feeling i'm still on my own and separated.

The solution lies in scale, it's impossible for an individual to address al these aspects, we need to come together, built real communities. Back to my garden, if I have one for me and my family, the effort to grow some more for another family isn't that much extra. And if they help from time to time it'll be even more fun. In turn this other family can work on, say: energy.

Another problem is the law, for almost everything you need a permit these days, and a lot of times they don't grant you one or things aren't allowed. This has to do with freedom. At one point these laws may have served us but now they serve the system.

One could say that the system is the way we are connected and do things together. But I don't know where my bread comes from, who made it and what's in it. Here the scale is to large. There is no real connection you see. Now this is also the thing here with WorldShift we may have the same ideas, worldview and approach but on other levels we don't concur with this.

Things that would help:

-Ervin commenting from time to time on various topics

-Coming together in real life

-Connecting to other projects by donating the ideas (where they can be of value)

-Marketing on other social networks

-Good and active moderation, cut out the crap from people who seek commercial opportunities

Hi, Joseph

Glad I'm not the only one a bit confused by these WorldShift sites. I also respect and admire Ervin Laszlo, but it seems to me there needs to be an avenue for action by all involved, not just information distribution from eminent people or this small social network. Any ideas how this might happen?

Hello Malcolm: Joseph here from halfway around the world in Croatia. I have been trying to get some "traction" on this website and this is the only "social" website I visit. It is not entirely clear to me what it is about. I very much respect and admire what Prof. Laszlo has put into motion. You questions are spot on. Let's put our brains together. Cheers.

Hello, Gaolu

Thanks for your comment. If I understand correctly what you are developing, it sounds very interesting and very helpful. Unfortunately, I don't know Chinese and so cannot check out your website.

Best wishes, Malcolm

thank you Malcolm Hollick

I’m now shifting focus from books to the web, and linking to like-minded people and organizations.

——this is our mission of wisenetbrain, we just do the project to link like-minded people, we call "mind 2 mind \heart to heart \interest 2 interest" internet.this do by AI automatical based on the semantic analyst and intelligent search engine.

I worked for china branch of budapest club since 2004, we translate and bulid up  the budapest club website (www.bdpsclub.org, www.bdpsclub.org/bbs/). we want to save the literature ,and we agree with Dr.Ervin Laszlo. so we act to do this .and Prof. Mingjiayin is our President of china branch of budapest club, Other core members, such as chenming, liugang, hujie and so on.now budapest club have good influence on china. We have much in common. I look forward to collaborating towards our shared goals. Best,

How to save the collpasing-world?
How to make the world shift true?
How to create the global-brain?
How to create the world concious?

Now we do intelligent semantic search engine(Next Google, better than google) ,and the global wisenetbrain and  "the global conscious's creator " , to help create the Quantum shift of the Global Brain and to improve the global conscious WorldShift and the global conscious evolution .
Our AI(Artificial Intelligence) search engine tech is better than google .our AI tech can Analysis the semantic relaxtion of different words and phrases, and create the brain-map automatic, such as semantic-Neurons .then our AI tech make the internet create "the net-brain". the AI tech is better than keywords search and google's PR(pagerank) Algorithm.
Now we use our semantic search engine( AI Algorithm better than google) to create new product and new application——the "mind to mind internet", to help the angels and human linked by spirits automantic. the Facebook is only "people to people internet", need "person seek person" by hand. Then we can help get "same-conscious mind" together automantic.for example ,we can collect all of person who should have Potential interest in the mission of budapest club  and who want to join the worldshift automantic.
on this base ,we can make the world collective-conscious true and make the global brain true ,make the worldshift true.
our model is "next google +next facebook",and become the new-trend and new-wave of internet evolution.

The semantic search engine model show:
http://www.jyicl.com/nexUs/login.aspx
name:gaolu,code:gaolugl

Please search the word (chinese ,such as DNA) in the input box, please use chinese.for the model treat chinese only now ,but if we input the english or french or other data ,the analyst engine should create the semantic brain-map of this language automatical.
and please point the Triangle of ball ,then the semantic tree (knowledge tree) should expand . the machine-compute should find the relaxtion of phrase or words.
the application and new prodcut can't open .so this is only the under-engine, not the application.

Now we need  help  to promote this to the whole world and to help save human literature.if you have interest ,then we can introduce the new application face to face.

I 'm the author <beyond google --the business chance of the global netbrain>.  there are three books about "the global brain"  in the same time ,such as Ervin Laszlo <Quantum shift of the Global Brain>, the chairman of budapest club. and YangYouShan "the global brain" in shanghai ,and GaoLu(me)"Beyond google -the business chance of global netbrain" in beijing.

Many thanks for your response, David.

I have explored the other WorldShift sites, but WS 2012 seems to provide the only opportunity to post blogs rather than just comments. A couple of reactions to my experience of discovering WS:

  • I didn't find worldshift community until I got your comment. I assume it didn't come up in the top 20 on google search. However, it would have done little to help my sense of confusion at the proliferation of WS sites. It took me considerable time and persistence to work out what WS was all about, and the roles of the various sites/projects are still not entirely clear. I think it would help a lot to attract people if there was a single portal with a clear, brief overview and introduction. This might be an upgraded WScommunity provided ways can be found to put it top of the search results (where it's in competition with a computer game!)
  • I found some of the sites too long and wordy (eg WS Council). At the opposite extreme, WS2012 seems to give very little information about its raison d'etre other than to say it's intended to be a social network. In between these, WS Movement seems to get it about right - helped by a relatively large font that makes life easier for my aging eyes.
  • Inconsistent opportunities for reader/member input. Some sites are only for experts to express their views with no space for comments. At the other extreme is WS2012 with nothing but user input. I found WS Movement frustrating because it sets out to be a people's movement but doesn't seem to cater for input of ideas from outside the management group.

I have been grappling with the challenges of influencing the future of the world for a long time - see my profile for more information and website links. It seems to me that the target audience for WS is western educated, reasonably affluent people, most of whom are already overcommitted with career, family etc and protect themselves with (often unconscious) denial. Most also are addicted to the consumer lifestyle - even the 'alternative' movement has been co-opted. It is no accident that shopping is now known as 'retail therapy'. So the challenge in growing a movement like WS is to create awareness and then a willingness and intention to change. Perhaps I'm unduly pessimistic, but I suspect that WS will only become a mass movement when enough people/addicts hit rock bottom.

In our recent book, Hope for Humanity, my wife and I argue that the root cause of this addictive behaviour and psychological denial is emotional trauma. It is clear from epigenetics that the effects of trauma are passed down the generations through gene expression, and a huge percentage of people suffer trauma at some stage in their development from conception onwards. In our view, there is an urgent need to develop strategies to heal existing trauma on a mass scale, and reduce the creation of fresh trauma. In this regard, I think WS Movement's emphasis on therapy is spot on.

More than enough for one comment! I hope this helps to spark further discussion

With best wishes, Malcolm

Thank you Malcolm for your excellent blog and questions under the heading "How can Worldshift be more effective". Firstly as a Co-Initiator of Worldshift I should clarify that this site is of course a social network and therefore is intended to spark discussions amongst like-minded people around the world. Although there are nearly 900 members to date you're quite right that there is little interaction or discussions amongst the members at present. I suppose that could change if we managed to reach 10x to 20x the membership at some point. In addition to this social network there are numerous Worldshift action-based initiatives underway. Those projects can be viewed at http://ervinlaszlo.com/worldshiftcommunity. The challenge for the Worldshift initiatives is indeed to reach and engage many more people worldwide and without significant resources at present to do so. I'd very much like to here any ideas you or other members may have in this regard. The uniqueness of the Worldshift message in my view is that it is holistic in its approach, focused on conscious evolution and the needed values for a new world and promotes systemic level change rather then solely political or social activism which addresses the major symptoms of the highly dysfunctional existing global system rather then the root causes. Best, David
