From Crisis to Collaboration?

I received this commentary from the Shaping Tomorrow futures network in an email today. My view is that collaboration in response to the many inter-connected crises of our time is an essential response. Crises contains both great challenge and great opportunity!

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA FROM BORIS FREESMAN Q.C.

Boris Freesman is a colleague in Toronto and fellow lawyer who was a life-long associate of cybernetics pioneer Stafford Beer. Boris just penned this blog as an Open Letter to President Obama about what real systemic change would be based on as opposed to merely "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic". It's all about 'increasingly systemic complexity' which is of course a main perspective of Dr. Laszlo's work and prominent in the thinking… Continue

Two Deadly Dangers: Fear and Complacency

Franklin Roosevelt said that we have nothing to fear but fear itself. He was right about fearing fear - fear is deadly. But not quite right about not having anything else to fear. There is another thing that's just as deadly: it's complacency.

Fear paralyzes, or makes you do unreflective, irrational things. Complacency makes you do nothing - it will work out anyway, or somebody else will take care of it.

Time is Limited

How much is left if it's 11:59? When are we going to wake up? The B'nai Baruch says that we "had to sink this low, so that we finally Wake Up" there is no more left to postpone the inevitable. We must realize how we are all one, completely dependent no, not depended but interdependent on one another. I think.

The 1957 Nobel Prize, the MEG, our electrical engineering model, and a comment on the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics

"Question: Where does all electromagnetic (EM) field energy and all EM potential energy come from in the first place?

Answer: From the vacuum all around us.

An almost instant Nobel prize was awarded in 1957 for substantiating the extraction process."

Tom Bearden

What set me off this morning - Ides of March version of head slamming keyboard

I just read today’s Sunday NY Times op-ed column by the pompous Thom Friedman. Friedman calls it “The Next Really Cool Thing” that the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory hopes to fire 192 giant lasers at multiple hydrogen pellets at a cost of $10 billion per plant to produce a mini-sun in your neighborhood. Friedman claims they should be able to do it within two to three years if they… Continue

A Curious World - Some Paradoxes

We live in a curious world, and have a curious attitude toward the world. The environment is degenerating, the climate is changing, but most of us are preoccupied with making money and maintaining our privileges—we keep juggling for position on the deck of the Titanic.

There is an overproduction of food in many parts of the world, but more than a thousand million go hungry; every six seconds someone dies of starvation.

Six million children a year die for lack of food,… Continue

Futurist Magazine article: "Emerging Technologies and the Global Crisis of Maturity"

The current March-April 2009 issue of The Futurist Magazine contains a number of excellent articles. I especially recommend "Emerging Technologies and the Global Crisis of Maturity" by William Halal which posits three broad alternative paths for humanity from now until 2030 based on technological innovation as a primary driver of change. The very detailed technology forecasts were generated by TechCast - a virtual Think Tank utilizing the technology forecasting… Continue

Global Warming - The Controversy

Global warming is an indisputable fact: in recent years the average global temperature has risen significantly, and the warming is accelerating. Currently, debate centers on whether warming is due to human activity or to natural causes.

There were other warming periods in the history of the Earth; geologists speak of alternating hot and cold stable states—“hot-houses” and “ice-houses.” The best known previous hot-house occurred 55 million years ago, when between one and two terratons… Continue

Worldshift 2012 - My New Book

Until quite recently we could paraphrase Mark Twain in saying that, the same as about the weather, everybody talks about a global crisis but nobody does anything about it. Now people are beginning to do something about it, with a new leadership in the White House and the media full of reports on economic and financial crashes and ecological threats. But big questions remain: (1) what kind of change do we really need, and (2) how much time do we have to make it?

Worldshift 2012… Continue

Global Emergency - The Causes

The principal causes of the global crisis are unsustainable conditions in society, the economy, and in the ecology.

Unsustainability in society. The contemporary world is polarized; there is a large and still growing gap between rich and poor, powerful and marginalized. The gap is expressed in economic terms, but it’s a social reality. It depresses the quality of life, and even the chances of survival of vast populations.

Unsustainability in the economy. In the six decades… Continue

The essence of emergency

It's great to be here with this growing social network of like-minded friends. Thank you for the warm welcomes. My interest here is to keep the focus on what we can do, what we should do, and what we must do as stewards and midwives of conscious evolution to purposefully and intentionally evolve human consciousness. In this sense, I see our role as that of Evolutionary Leaders, following the dictum, "we cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the… Continue

Hope vs. fear: Should reality always trump optimism?

I read this article in the Toronto Star last weekend. The article discusses how to present 'bad news' to the public with reference to the current economic situation.
