- Do you believe we're now in a global emergency?
- “I believe we are in a “global emergence” that is turning into a “global emergency.” The emergency is related to our resistance toward change. For the last five hundred years and increasingly over the last century several facets of new consciousness have been trying to emerge. As Edgar Morin points out, the shift to a planetary era began in the fifteenth century. We are also witnessing other emergences everywhere: the shift from industrial to post-industrial, from formal thinking to postformal reasoning, from fragmentation and specialisation to integral and transdisciplinary approaches. Yet we also see these healthy emergences being blocked in many ways by regressive tendencies such as fear, greed and self-interest. For many years I have been working to nurture new ways of thinking, philosophically, culturally, educationally and have researched and published widely in these areas. My primary interest now is to find and connect with others working towards similar ends and to collaborate with them to create the critical mass we need to nurture emergence rather than inherit emergency.” Jennifer Gidley is the elected President (2009-2013) of the World Futures Studies Federation (WFSF) a global scholarly futures organization that was founded in Paris in 1973. Jennifer is a psychologist, educator and futures researcher who works from a trandisciplinary understanding of global shifts in culture and consciousness. She is currently a Research Fellow in the Global Cities Research Institute, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. She works globally, creating networks—both conceptual and participatory—between futures studies and other transversal fields, such as integral studies, global studies, transdisciplinary studies, postformal education and global youth movements.
- What does climate change mean to you?
- I have a big picture, macrohistorical view of climate change. Mostly we humans forget how connected we are to the cosmos and the biosphere. If we try to take a deep time perspective, we can see that in the past most of the big leaps of consciousness made by humans were associated with dramatic and sometime sudden climate change. The shift from the warm inter-glacial period to the big ice age created conditions in which human artistic development increased dramatically – evidenced in the European cave paintings. The end of the ice age paralleled the shift from hunter-gatherer societies to more settled agrarian communities. I am not saying that the current climate emergency is a good thing and should be allowed to run rampant. What I do believe though is that as a species we are going through another great leap of consciousness. We need to participate in this evolution willingly and joyously in partnership with each other and the ecologies of earth and cosmos through co-creating and nurturing the emerging postformal, integral and planetary consciousness. If we do not consciously co-create the necessary changes, I believe we will find ourselves as passive recipients of a climate crisis beyond our control, and our consciousness will change anyway but through much pain and suffering of all beings.
